Pregnancy Tests – Know Early if you are Pregnant

Pregnancy tests can end a lot of confusion and worry. Some women approach the prospect of pregnancy with excitement, others with worry. No matter what your feelings are about being pregnant, a pregnancy test will let you know one way or the other if you are pregnant or not.

Pregnancy-testsIt doesn’t matter if you are trying to get pregnant or are worried about an unplanned pregnancy, a pregnancy test is the first step. For a lot of women, there is a lot of stress involved with the thought of taking a pregnancy test. Many emotions can come to the surface, including excitement and fear. But knowing you are pregnant as soon as possible can help you make the decisions that are right for you.

pregnancy testing What are Pregnancy Tests?

Pregnancy tests come in two forms, urine tests or blood tests. They test for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is released when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. HCG is only found in a woman’s body if she is pregnant.

  • Urine tests: Many women choose a simple urine pregnancy test (HTP) about a week after a missed period, to initially find out if a pregnancy has occurred.
  • Blood tests: Used less often than a urine test, these tests can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine pregnancy test. Detection can be made at about six to eight days after ovulation. However with blood tests the results are not immediately available, and can take longer to get. Blood pregnancy tests aren’t done very often. This page focuses on urine pregnancy tests.

If you have symptoms of pregnancy such as a missed period, nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue, pregnancy testing can confirm your suspicions once and for all.
